36th Heroes’ Day Celebrations to Honor 50 Distinguished Individuals

Uganda is set to celebrate its 36th Heroes’ Day on June 9, 2025, in Lyantonde District, paying tribute to 50 individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the country.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes:

A Memorable Inspiration.”Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that national heroes have left an indelible mark on the country’s journey, from the struggles of the colonial era to the challenges faced in post-independence Uganda.

Honoring the Brave

Among the distinguished honorees are:- Lt. Gen. Pecos Kutesa (RIP)- Brig. Gen. Sebugwawo Eugene (rtd)- Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rashande (rtd)- Maj. Joel Babumba- Col. Enock Nkunda- Maj. Mugira Kinuka

Civilians Who Made a Difference

Many civilians in Lyantonde District played critical roles in the success of the Bush war, providing material and moral support. Some of the notable civilian honorees include:- Gengwe Stephen- Kigingi Livingstone- Benedicto Sebugwawo (Father to Brig. Gen. Eugene Sebugwawo)- Madam Akiiki Mugeiga- Rutemba Kezekia- Luwere Kula

A Heavy Price Paid

Minister Babalanda also highlighted the sacrifices made by the people of Lyantonde, who paid a huge price for supporting the liberation war. Many were kidnapped, arrested, or forced to migrate, while others lost their lives or were subjected to cruel military detentions.The 36th Heroes’ Day celebrations will serve as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals to serve Uganda’s future.
