The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has confirmed the upcoming retirement of Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, former Deputy Commander of Defence Forces (CDF).
General Elwelu is set to retire on July 31st, 2025.According to the UPDF, General Elwelu has completed the necessary documentation process at the UPDF headquarters in Mbuya. He is one of seven generals who have finalized their retirement papers, joining a larger group of 1,337 officers and personnel set to retire from the UPDF.
The six other generals preparing for retirement alongside General Elwelu are:
– Maj Gen Hudson Mukasa
– Maj Gen Francis Ben Okello
– Maj Gen George Igumba
– Brig Gen John Byuma
– Brig Gen Dominic Twesigomwe
– Brig Gen Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze
General Elwelu is a notable figure in Ugandan military history, having led the 2016 operation against the Rwenzururu Kingdom palace in western Uganda.
The operation resulted in significant loss of life, with over 100 people reported dead.The UPDF has acknowledged the contributions of General Elwelu and the other retiring officers, recognizing their service to the country.
